Hawkins Bolden

Left blind from a childhood accident, Hawkins Bolden (1914-2005) never saw his art and never intended for it to be seen as art. Inspired by his young nephew to employ a tool to ward off birds from his beloved vegetable garden, he created this sculpture comprising life’s discarded flotsam. Assembled from old rags, the soles of shoes and tattered lengths of discarded garden hose coarsely joined through holes in metal debris, Bolden fashioned scarecrows Picasso would be proud of, the figurative visages are reminiscent of abstract masters before him. The context of his blindness and his earnest intentions neutralize the human-scaled lifeless limbs that are inexplicably haunting epitomizing how to confront life’s challenges with creativity.
